DESCRIPTION:<p><span>Keynote Speaker:</span> SHIORI ITO, Journalist and Documentary filmmaker</p><p><span>Chair:</span> KAREN THORNBER, Harry Tuchman Levin Professor in Literature and Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Harvard University</p><p><span>Discussant:</span> AKIKO TAKEYAMA, Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies &amp; Director, Center for East Asian Studies, University of Kansas</p><p>FILM SCREENING from 5:15 -7:00pm<br>&amp; DISCUSSION SESSION with Journalist and Documentary filmmaker SHIORI ITO from 7:00 - 8:00pm</p><p>Journalist and documentary filmmaker <strong>SHIORI ITŌ</strong> will appear in person on Oct. 15 (Wednesday) for a screening and discussion of her widely-acclaimed and Oscar-nominated documentary memoir <em>Black Box Diaries</em> (2024). Itō is the first Japanese documentary filmmaker to be nominated for an Academy Award.</p><p>The film chronicles Shiori Itō's ongoing investigation and pursuit of justice following the sexual violence she endured as a young journalist at the hands of a senior figure in Japanese media. Her unwavering resolve to challenge Japan's patriarchal judicial, political, and media systems has made her case a landmark in the legal and cultural recognition of gender-based violence in Japan.</p><p>In addition to being nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, <em>Black Box Diaries</em> received the Peabody Award and was named one of the top 5 documentary films of 2024 by the National Board of Review. Despite these accolades, the film has yet to be screened in Japan.</p><p>Please join us in a conversation with Shiori Itō following the screening of <em>Black Box Diaries</em>. The discussion will be moderated by <strong>KAREN THORNBER</strong>, Harry Tuchman Levin Professor in Literature and Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Harvard University and <strong>AKIKO TAKEYAMA</strong>, Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, University of Kansas.</p>
